September and October will be a sound art focus for Digital Arts Remote Lectures Series. And the first of the series will be artist Emeka Ogboh based in Lagos, Nigeria.
“The Lagos Soundscapes is an ongoing sound project that explores Lagos as a vibrant African Mega city. As the name suggests the project is invested in acoustics, however, what is central here is that the accumulated sound defines the character of the city of Lagos. The amalgamation of these sounds and more, defines the city Lagos as the economic, commercial and cultural capital of Nigeria.”
The Berlin Node of Upgrade International has just announced the start of the Media Facades Festival. This is worth a look as they have broadcast events from 27th August to 12th September.
Physical Computing Workshop for Artists and Designers
Artist and Creative Developer Daniel Hirshmann
3 Part Workshop: 1 - 6 June 2010
Digital Arts, Wits University, Johannesburg.
“Physical Computing is an approach to design and making that positions the human at the centre of the interaction. Over the course of 3 sessions, participants will learn how to gather sensor information from the real world and use it to effect change within their own projects. We will cover introductions to communication, LED control, programming, motors, and various electronic components - while remaining aware of their creative applications in the real world.”
This workshop will be extended into an open creative workgroup with local creative people and the Hacksaws Group. So if you can, book off two weekends.
This workshop is being hosted by the Hacksaws Art and Technology Support Group and the Digital Arts Division of the WSOA.

Andreas Broeckmann will be making a tour of South Africa to better understand the local media arts enviroment. He will be visiting Joburg, Pretoria and Cape Town this month.
On Wednesday the 3rd June at 13:15 Upgrade Joburg will host his talk “Rethinking Media Arts from Transmediale to ISEA2010″ at the Digital Arts Seminar Room at the Wits School of Arts (map).
“Since the 1980s, festivals have been the most important hubs for
the promotion and distribution of media art. The evolution of these
festivals therefore also reflects the way in which conceptions of
media art have changed. First founded in 1988, the Transmediale
festival in Berlin, for instance, was initially a venue only for
video art, and only in the course of the 90s opened its programme for
interactive and multi-media art. Its traditional critical approach,
first articulated by many political documentaries in the programme,
later resulted in major conferences on the social impact of digital
media. Andreas Broeckmann, who was the director of transmediale from
2001 - 2007, will discuss the transformation of media art over the
past 20 years and will offer an outlook onto the preparations for the
ISEA2010 RUHR, the 16th International Symposium on Electronic Art,
which he is organising in the German Ruhr region for next year.” Christo Doherty
