Workshop documentation

Daniel Hirschmann ran a really successful workshop last weekend on the 5th and 6th of June at the Digital Arts Division at Wits University.  The number of participants almost out weighed the amount of space we had available to us. A great boost for the art tech. scene in Johannesburg.

As a quick overview Dan Hirschmann taught the use of Arduino with a focus on programming for lighting and installation design. It was alot of good fun with most participants using the locally made Aarduino boards. Many of participants are members of the Hacksaws Art & Tech. group and if they weren’t members before they are members now. The workshop was facilitated by members of the Hacksaws group, Anton Coetzee, Dino Fizzotti and Tegan Bristow. It was fantastic to have Dan out from London to show us his work and share the vast amount of experience he has with us.

We are all looking forward to the great Arduino artworks, projects and products that will come out of this workshop.

Physical Computing Workshop for Artists and Designers

Artist and Creative Developer Daniel Hirshmann

3 Part Workshop: 1 - 6 June 2010

Digital Arts, Wits University, Johannesburg.

“Physical Computing is an approach to design and making that positions the human at the centre of the interaction.  Over the course of 3 sessions, participants will learn how to gather sensor information from the real world and use it to effect change within their own projects.  We will cover introductions to communication, LED control, programming, motors, and various electronic components - while remaining aware of their creative applications in the real world.”

More of Hirshmann’s work here http://www.plankman.com

Please note:

This workshop will be extended into an open creative workgroup with local creative people and the Hacksaws Group. So if you can, book off two weekends.

This workshop is being hosted by the Hacksaws Art and Technology Support Group and the Digital Arts Division of the WSOA.

If you are interested in attending please contact me at tegan (dot) bristow (at) gmail (dot) com.

Lecture

I DO have images - but there is an issue with the file structure. Please contact me if you would like to see them.

I will present a paper at the WSOA Research Seminar.

The paper is  A Natural Defiance: Etching a Circuit Board in the Printing Studio.

It is draw from research done with Dino Fizotti (MSc Candidate) and Jill Ross, Fine Art Printer of David Krut Fine Art.

Here is a little more on the paper:

A framed presentation of the research outcomes of an experimental (in the scientific sense) research undertaking to develop a circuit board in a fine arts print studio. The project is primarily an experiment in medium convergence. The presentation will focus on the cohesion of fine arts printing and electrical engineering through the development of an interactive digital arts tool. I will use the research outcomes to speak to the post-medium condition as presented by Rosalind Krauss.

This particular circuit board is a tool used in the creation of immersive and interactive works, and is not an artwork in itself but forms part of a work. In the Digital Arts division, use of the board is co-taught by the electrical engineering department as a key learning and development tool in the MA practice program. However, this particular research undertaking addressed the expertise of electrical engineering and fine arts printing, and all the equipment and technique that go with it, as they are put together to develop this tool in the print studio.

The outcome of this research undertaking is twofold. Firstly and also the central topic of the research seminar; it positions an analysis, through documentation, of the enhancement and sharing of knowledge across both fields. It explores how interactive digital art through its natural defiance of purest medium practice acts as a cohesive form for these disparate yet relevant sets of expertise. Using this experimental research as a frame, I address Krauss’s post-medium condition to better understand medium, as well as the redemptive state of the post-medium condition. I additionally address the relationship of electrical engineering to fine arts printing and digital arts, all of whom are located at the same research university. In addition to the above, the experimental research has led to the creation of best practice recommendations and the development of extensive documentation and tutorial material (this will not be presented – only outlined).

Workshop documentation

Laura Nova’s exhibition and workshops were great fun and a huge success at the Digital Arts School.

Her exhibition referencing her own encounters with love and the ‘almost dangerous’ participatory art approach of Fluxus; included an 8 meter sign flashing “he loves me / he loves me not” and a jumping platform from which visitors could launch them selves.

It also included documentation of work done with students in the creation of “un-useless objects”. Further documentation of some of these can be found on the student blogs:

Laura Nova has been Artist in Residence at the Digital Arts Division of the Wits School of Arts (home to Upgrade Joburg) for the last two months. She will finalise her stay with a very interactive (though not purely digital) exhibition in the Sub-Station Gallery.

This exhibition additionally includes a selection of works from a workshop with students on “UnUseless Inventions”. It looks to be an fun show - please look out for a images soon.

We have billed her for an Upgrade Joburg Event:
She will also be giving a short lecture on her recent work and a walk-about of the exhibition at 13:15 on Wednesday the 26th August.
